I’ve been working on asking for what I need. Like, out loud. To the person I want it from.

Apparently some people just do this. They weren’t taught that asking for things is greedy. Or they should be independent. Or their needs are unimportant. Or people who love them enough should just know what they need. Or whatever other tired script it was that was handed down to me from my family and society. (And let’s factor in that I’m stubborn as all fuck and it’s hard for me to admit I need anything at all.)

So I’ve been pushing myself to stop being cranky, or bratty, or defensive, or withdrawn, and to just say it out loud.

“I fell like I need some reassurance.”

“I need ten more minutes.”

“I need a snuggle.”

“I need some space.”

“I need you to hurt me.”

“I just need to know…”

It’s a challenge sometimes to stop myself and figure out what it really is I need, or to assure myself that what I need is important and I’m entitled to ask, but it’s astoundingly simple. And it’s changing everything.

One I got from UE that I like is “I know this is true but I need to hear it again.” Sometimes I will just flat-out ask for the thing I need to hear, orthogonally from its truth: “Tell me I’m going to be okay.” The only problem with that is that people often don’t understand how literal I’m being; I usually say it because I have figured out some specific words I think would make me feel better, and it’s not as useful to hear other related words, even with the same intent behind them.

In general, though, I still have a lot of trouble with this. Not as much as I used to—I mean, I used to not even realize that I needed to ask or could, which was obviously worse. And then figuring out what I wanted to ask for was hard, and now getting up the nerve to do it is hard. I don’t like asking people to take care of me, on so many levels (which is why I’m so grateful for the people who assert loudly that they’re happy to do it—you know who you are).

I’ve toyed with the idea of making a Fizzish-to-Common phrasebook. It would have things like “Can I borrow you for a second?” (usually “I’m unhappy and want contact,” unless the context is obviously different) and “Hang on to me?” (which means “… as if I would fall if you didn’t,” i.e. squeeze me and don’t let go). Or, you know, I could just get better at being clear.

One of the things that struck me early on, though, about being with Ali and Leon, is how much they heard, acknowledged, and respected those requests. For the big stuff, the important stuff, of course—but also for the little stuff. The things that didn’t have to matter, but if I asserted what I wanted they’d hear it anyway. It startled me how much that made me feel safe and looked out for.
